Magic Johnson was named President of Basketball Operations this week for the Los Angeles Lakers. The former point guard for the Lakers was hired after Mitch Kupchak, former General Manager of the Lakers, and Jim Buss, former Vice President of Basketball Operations, were both fired.
Johnson is eager to get started with the team and was quick to send a tweet about his new office position with the NBA team. “I have high expectations of myself… the @Lakers are about winning and I’ll work hard to make that happen” – @MagicJohnson
The Lakers are wrapping up a 19-39 season, the NBA’S third-worst record according to nba.com. New coach Luke Walton provided new energy for the team, but ultimately the internal operations team got rusty and lost the spark that kept the 16-time NBA champs performing at peak levels.
This new direction from Johnson is a step in the right direction for the team and it’s office staff. It could not have been an easy decision for Jeanie Buss to fire Jim Buss, her own brother, as well as Kupchak. Unfortunately, when the office staff has gone stale there are not many choices but to refresh the team with a new perspective. It is also a bonus that Johnson already knows what the team is about, what they represent, and what their goals are moving forward. The Lakers have no choice but to work on improving their worsening reputation.
We all know the famous Magic Johnson quote, “Ask not what your team can do for you. Ask what you can do for your team.” This quote exemplifies the ideals that Johnson holds close to his heart. His new position is the perfect example of him looking at what he can do for this team. Johnson was with the Lakers for 13 seasons giving them peak performance on the court. Now is his time to shine in the office. Fans who have commented on an nba.com blog seem optimistic for the new president:
Ending the 2016-2017 season optimistic towards the future is better than being stuck in a negative rut. If you are not someone who ever followed the NBA closely, now may be a good time to start. The 2017-2018 season for the Lakers is going to be a big one. The once basketball star turned office executive has some large goals to accomplish. But with a name like Magic, anything can happen!
